Light, Color and Faraway Places in a Summer Show

As a perfect summer exhibit, from July 11 to August 15 the Art League of Long Island is pleased to present the landscapes and interiors of William Starkweather (1879 1969), early 20th century American painter, from the collection of Peter Falotico of Northport. Full of vitality, the thirty-five watercolors and oils on view, painted largely during Starkweather¹s summer travels to remote locales in Maine and the maritime provinces of Canada,
provide a visual diary of his life and show us a thoughtful artist who rejected the prevalent style of his day to create works that are surprisingly modern to our eyes.

Paintng My Model - by: William StarkweatherStarkweather, who studied with John Henry Twachtman at the Art Students League and then with Joaquin Sorolla in Spain, participated in more that 60 exhibitions, illustrated books, wrote and lectured extensively on art history, served in both curatorial and administrative capacities at the Hispanic Society of America on upper Broadway in Manhattan, and taught painting at a number of schools, including Cooper Union and Hunter College. His summers were spent traveling, alone or with friends, to paint en plein air in New England, Canada, Bermuda, Mexico, Spain and Italy. His works are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, the Tides Institute in Maine and the Hickory Museum in North Carolina. This will be his first solo exhibition in the New York area in 22 years. One of his paintings is to be included in the Metropolitan's 2011 calendars. This exhibition is especially appropriate to our mission as a teaching institution. Of interest to artists and art students alike is his use of a square format in his watercolors, decades before it became a popular strategy for artists today. His remarkable draftsmanship (he never used a pencil to sketch out his compositions), his forthright use of color and the ease and delight in which he painted both the landscape and his indoor surroundings can be inspirational. At 5:00, prior to the July 16th reception, Peter Falotico will talk about how he came to collect Starkweather paintings‹he now owns forty‹and expand on the life of this very interesting painter. It is a happy coincidence that this summer the Hispanic Society of America is featuring the paintings of Joaquin Sorolla. The dedicated art lover can view both exhibits to see where inspiration leads.
